Good Friday is turning out to be anything but good for Melinda. The shameful way she loses her job may be nothing compared to how her marriage has recently crumbled. What's coming around the corner for her this Easter could be the making or breaking of her in Once Upon a Sunday by author Renée Allen McCoy.I appreciate how much the author packed into a story of this length without overstuffing it or making it feel like disjointed chaos. There's enough backstory and tidbits about Melinda to help you understand and empathize with her. It's a very "come to Jesus" type of read for those who like an evangelistic message in their Christian Fiction.
I did find the story's confusion of tenses to be distracting. As Melinda relates her account to the reader in first person, she switches back and forth between past and present tense quite a bit, and most of the switches don't seem intentional. Also, as the story wraps up, it starts to wrap up a little too perfectly. I think some of the outcomes would've needed more time and development, so as not to feel Happily-Ever-After-like so suddenly.
Still, it's an uplifting story that deals with hard issues, and I think many other ChristFic fans will enjoy it.

Once Upon a Sunday (Audible Audio Edition) Renee Allen McCoy Stacy Wilson FaytheWorks Publishing Books Reviews
We all are faced with adversary at some point in our lives. It's how we deal with them and pick up the pieces that really matters, and that was proven here. God is always in the mist waiting on us to make the decision. Renee, this was a very short story but you got your point across well! It would be great if you could do a spin off!
Melinda realize that she needed God in her life. Asking for help from God allowed her to entertain Vita. This reassurance of Faith let's us know that God is with us and never leaves us. We must ask for His help.
I loved how God reacted and helped Melinda after her dedicating her life back to Christ. Her bridges were reestablished much stronger than before. God is just that GOOD!
Very difficult to read, watching the domino effect of disaster afflict a single mother going through a crumbling marriage & about to lose her child
I gave it a chance, hoping to see more of a Christian message throughout. However, it was also difficult reading the glass-half-empty attitude on nearly every page.
Melinda lost her job, her husband cheated, had cps called on her for an accident. She was really going through it and didn’t lean on God at all. When she was going to end her life, an angel appeared and she saw the goodness of God’s he was right on time. She rededicated her life and things started to fall into place. It was a very short book but it had a great message about the redeeming power of Jesus.
Melinda Black is having a rough day rough couple of months. After her husband has an affair, Melinda just can’t seem to get back to normal. After snapping one too many times at work she loses her job and the roller coaster ride begins. Her close friends try to help and keep her spirits lifted but Melinda’s faith has long since wavered. Good Friday changes her forever.
This novella was a good change of pace read. The story line was thought out, but the characters could’ve used a tad more development. Anyone whose ever been in a relationship should be able to relate to the frustrations Melinda is going through.

I am reading the sample currently. I was really enjoying it until I got to one of the dramatic climaxes of the plot. The way the social worker/hospital scene was written makes it unfortunately obvious that little to no research was done on how a CPS/social work case is initiated or processed in real life.
Somehow—on a Friday *night* no less—within mere minutes this transpires
1. A nurse who knows nothing about the incident, and has not even spoken to the mother to discover anything, contacts CPS (—CPS, at night?) simply because a child was admitted with an injury
2. With no investigation at all and before even arriving on site, a social worker opens a case (?) and has request to have a child taken from his mom submitted to the courts —the courts, on a Friday *night* during which, realistically, I suspect she'd be at home in reality because these are not real working hours for a SW *initiating* a case, and no court for this type of case is open or processing cases at this time, and this fast!
3. Somehow all the paperwork gets processed by a CPS office I'm sure is closed by this time in reality, and it is then submitted and fully processed by a court to the point of making it so speedily to a judge—A judge. In minutes. On a Friday. After hours. And the judge declares an order to have the child taken away from the mother— mind you, without the SW who submitted the case even knowing what happened to the child yet, which we know is the case because the nurse who reported it knew nothing also. So that means this court also knew nothing. And the judge likewise. Yet s/he decreed that the child be taken already?
4. The SW arrives on site and is treated like a first responder (a cop) waving a badge and being admitted to see the child. She doesn't event stop to introduce herself to and interview the mother so she can get some information. And again, she's initiating a case on a Friday night after 5-6 PM...? SWs are *not* on call!
5. She then— after interviewing the child and still not having spoken to the mother yet—informs the mother that the judge, the one her office submitted incomplete paperwork to, and whose court processed all the paper and had it to him in minutes—at night—when I'm sure neither they nor he were working, this judge had ordered that her kid be taken. ...Though she was not guilty of child abuse...? What? So there was no interview, no on-site touch down, no idea of why a kid had an injury in the first place, n o home visit, no confirmation of abuse, and yet a child is ordered by a judge (in minutes...at night...when I know these offices are closed...and these processes take longer than this even in the day time) to be taken from his mom. ...Sigh.
It made such little sense that it annoyed me. I will continue reading but I really hope it goes back to being enjoyable. Man. I have hope. Aside from this the writing thus far was actually good and enjoyable.
There was a very good story line to this. I liked the fact that the main character realized her short comings prior to her salvation. I could not understand her Mom though until the end. I think that a person has to be seriously hurt by someone or something to not see your own child in the need of consultation. I felt so happy when it came together in the book. Everyone needs good Christian friend like those ladies who did try to help. But as usual in life and in fiction God has to be the one to turn Saul into Paul.
